Why Consider Breast Implant Removal?
You may want to remove your breast implants for a number of reasons. Discomfort, dissatisfaction, and personal preference are among the leading reasons many women choose to undergo breast explant surgeries. On the other hand, many women remove breast implants with the intention of replacing them with implants of a different size. In rare cases, breast implants can lead to health concerns due to capsular contracture or rupturing, necessitating removal immediately.
The Implant Removal Process
Removing breast implants is generally a straightforward surgery with a relatively short and manageable recovery. First, you will meet with one of our doctors for a breast explant consultation. Next, the surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, taking roughly 3 hours to complete. During the surgery, incisions will be made in the same region as original scarring if possible.
Recovery times are generally fairly short, with most women returning to work after about a week. As always, recovery differs per client, and you should consult your doctor for accurate recovery expectations after the surgery. It is normal to experience some discomfort and aching through the healing process. Immediately after the breast explant surgery, breasts will generally appear deflated. Usually, breasts will regain some shape and volume after a few weeks. Many women choose to follow a breast implant removal with a breast lift, resulting in tighter, fuller breasts immediately after the surgery.

At Vincent Surgical Arts, several plastic and reconstructive surgeons offer face lift surgery. The most common technique used involves an SMAS face lift (a submuscular aponeurotic system face lift). This tightens up the underlying muscular layer as well as the skin, providing an increase in tone that is longer lasting.

It is very important to have good communication with your surgeon and our staff. During your breast implant removal consultation, you and the doctor or his personal and thoroughly trained Surgery Consultant will discuss the expected outcome as well as the timing and type of anesthesia recommended. You will also talk about where the implant removal surgery will be performed, the risks and costs involved and obtain answers to any questions you may have. They will discuss factors that can influence your surgery and results such as what medication if any, you should avoid. You may also be asked to stop smoking at least one to two weeks before and after any procedure. Be sure to express any concerns or ask any questions you may have.
The doctors at Vincent Surgical Arts typically perform what is referred to as an en bloc implant removal. To understand the difference between an en bloc implant removal and a standard breast implant removal, we need to understand what a tissue capsule is. The capsule is soft scar tissue that forms around a breast implant after the initial augmentation surgery. Generally the capsule is undetectable, however, sometimes it forms into hard scar tissue leading to discomfort and aching. An en bloc implant removal surgery removes the breast implant and the tissue capsule at the same time. A standard implant removal simply removes the breast implant and is not concerned with removing the capsule.
All surgeries inherently contain some risk. We will sit down and explain any possible risks specific to you and take the time to answer all of your questions. Our surgeons are extremely experienced and talented and follow best practices to reduce all forms of risk.
